Gorakhgad Fort (Murbad):

 

 

LOCATION: 94 kms from Mumbai, 154 kms from Pune, 56 kms from Kalyan, 26 kms from Murbad. BEST TIME TO VISIT: September or you can travel any time throughout year.

 

 

Gorakhgad Fort

Gorakgad, The fort is named after saint Goraknath, who used to perform meditation here. This fort was mainly used by sadhus for meditation or hermits for mediation and also by local people of surrounding village.

This fort was mainly used by sadhus or hermits for meditation. And also by local people's of surrounding village, It was also used to guard the ancient trade route passing through Naneghat.

 

Nowadays people have been finding different ways of budget backpacking, travel cheap & save money.

 

Well, that's an exciting thing to do, so I tried it for myself. As I have always been fascinated by Trekking, Hiking & Travelling i planned out to do a budget Trek to a very famous Trekking Spot near Mumbai.

 

 

 

History:

 

It was built in Satavahan period of India's history (~5000 years ago). It was used in the era of Shivaji Maharaj, mainly as a stopover point from Junnar via Naneghat.

 

 

 

The fort was initially used to keep prisoners during the Nizamshahi rule. It was then ruled by the More clan of the Javli region.

 

 

 

 

How to reach Gorakhgad fort:

 

By Road:

 

Base Village for Gorakhgad fort is Dehri TaleKhal, near Mhasa, Murbad, Thane district.

 

- Best route for folks from Mumbai would be from Kalyan .

 

- Take a bus from Kalyan to Murbad, will cost you Rs-45.

 

- From Murbad take a direct bus to Dhasai & get down at Dehari, will cost you 35.

 

- Or take a jeep to Mhasa , and again another share jeep to Dehri .

 

- One way travelling till the base village will go upto 70-80 Rs. Total travelling for overall trip will be to 150 Rs.

 

By Train: Kalyan station which is around 56 kms.

 

By Air: Mumbai airport which is around 95 kms.
