LOCATION: 91 kms from Mumbai, 235 kms from Pune, 30 kms from Palghar, 11 km from Manor.

History:

Asherigad Fort was built by the Bhojraja of Shilahara dynasty. This fort was captured by Bimb Raja of Mahim (Palghar) from Kolis. This fort is about 800 years old.

It was ruled by Gujarat Sultanate. The Portuguese captain of Bassein, Antonio Moniz Barreto annexed the Asherigad in 1556, after bribing the Abyssinian captain who commanded the fort. Manor Fort was captured later. This fort was the northern boundary of Portuguese territory. Portuguese made it as a capital of 38 villages and 6 parishes. The fort had twenty water cisterns and two ponds.

In 1737, this fort was conquered by the Maratha forces led by Chimaji Appa against Provincia do Norte, but it was reconquered in the counter-offensive by Antonio Cardim de Frois, the new General of the North. In February 1739, it fell definitely into the Maratha hands. In 1818 Captain Dickinson captured this fort and thus it went into the hands of the British East India Company.

How to reach Asherigad Fort:

By Road: Base Village for Asherigad Fort is Khodkona village.

Reach Palghar ST Stand: Head to the Palghar ST (State Transport) bus stand.

Bus to Khodkona: Take an MSRTC bus from Palghar ST Stand to Khodkona village. Buses going towards Manor or Wada often pass through Khodkona.

Alight at Khodkona: Get off the bus at the Khodkona bus stop.

Walk to Base Village: Khodkona village is a short distance (about 1 km) inside from the main road. You can walk or take a shared rickshaw or van to the village.

Start Trek: From Khodkona village, you can begin your trek to Asheri Fort.

By Train: Palghar station which is around 30 kms.

By Air: Mumbai airport which is around 91 kms.

Tringalwadi Fort (Igatpuri)

LOCATION: 120 kms from Mumbai, 240 kms from Pune, 10km from Igatpuri, 50 km from Nashik, and 54 km from Trimbakeshwar.

Tringalwadi Fort:

Tringalwadi Fort lies on an ancient trade route passing through the Thal Ghat, near the Tringalwadi village. The village also has an irrigation dam built in 1978.

History:

The presence of the caves indicate that the caves and the fort might be constructed around 10th century. The fort was built to overlook the trade route which connected Konkan to Nashik area. In 1636 the Chhatrapati Shahaji Maharaj (father of king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) had to cede it to the Mughals after the defeat at Mahuli fort. It is not known when his son Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took control of this fort, but in 1688 this fort was won by Mughals. It is one of the 16 forts which was surrendered to the British in 1818 after the fall of Trymbakgad fort.

How to reach Tringalwadi Fort:

By Road: Base Village for Tringalwadi Fort is Tringalwadi.

To reach Tringalwadi Fort by MSRTC bus, you'll first need to get to Igatpuri, which is well-connected by MSRTC buses from Mumbai and Nashik. From Igatpuri, you can take a local jeep or other transport to Tringalwadi village, the base of the fort.

From Igatpuri to Tringalwadi Village:

Once in Igatpuri, head towards the S.T. stand (State Transport bus stand).
You can hire a jeep or other local transport from Igatpuri to Tringalwadi village, which is about 7 km away.
Alternatively, you can take a local bus or other transport from Igatpuri to Ghoti, and then another bus or transport from Ghoti to Tringalwadi village.

By Train: Igatpuri station which is around 10 kms.

By Air: Nashik airport which is around 50 kms.
