#23# Temple # Parvati temple (Western Group of Temples)

 10) Parvati temple

The Parvati temple is a restored shrine just to the south of Vishvanath temple. Parvati is one incarnation of the wife of Shiva.

The temple's appearance is unusual as it comprises only its tall, tapering sikhara (tower), topped with an enormous amalaka fruit and a high purnaghata “vase of plenty”. The porch (mandapa) may have been lost at some point in the past, exposing the front sandstone carvings on the sikhara to the elements. Alternatively, it is possible that the open porch (an exterior antarala) was part of the original design.

The central image on the lintel is Vishnu, but the interior statue depicts Gauri atop an iguana. The statue can only be glimpsed dimly through the screen doors which are kept perpetually locked. The name “Gauri”, is another name for Parvati.
